The Monterey Peace and Justice Center is seeking a staff member to recruit, train, supervise, and retain volunteers. The Volunteer Manager will be responsible for seeing that the Center is staffed during open hours and as needed for various programs, events and special projects — including the art gallery and lending library.
The position is part-time, 20 hours per week, paying $15 to $18 per hour, depending on experience and training. The person hired for this position will use a variety of interpersonal, communication, and administrative skills to coordinate a pool of volunteers in activities that further the mission of the Monterey Peace and Justice Center. Work hours are flexible.
Volunteer Manager:
- Actively recruit, train, supervise and retain volunteers for events and programs hosted and/or sponsored by the Monterey Peace and Justice Center (MPJC).
- Supervise volunteers at MPJC, which involves scheduling, orientation of new volunteers, and preparation of task lists for volunteer job assignments.
- Direct volunteers to collaborate with MPJC committees, including Programming, Special Events, Art Gallery, and Fundraising committees.
- Collaborate with other MPJC staff and board members to develop meaningful volunteer opportunities.
- Become familiar with the Filemaker Pro volunteer management system and volunteer database.
- Recognize volunteers by arranging annual events to acknowledge and appreciate their work – collectively and individually, highlighting their impact, and to encourage camaraderie.
Facility Support:
- Coordinate volunteer staffing of the Peace Center to ensure coverage during open-to-the-public hours, 1:00 pm to 5:30 pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
- Become familiar with use the audio-visual equipment and train volunteers to use it for events.
- Learn the lending Library system and train volunteers to maintain it.
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Coordinate with CSUMB Service Learning Institute, designated MPJC board member(s), and with Service Learner recruits in conducting service projects at MPJC. May supervise some Service Learning projects.
- Report monthly to the MPJC Board, attend board meetings as a guest, to provide a status report, or optionally submit a written or electronic report in advance of the meeting.
- Commit to a mutually supportive and collegial working relationship with other staff and volunteers.
Desired Skills and Experience:
• Commitment to nonviolence and core values of the Monterey Peace and Justice Center
• Familiarity with nonviolent communication and compatible methods of interaction
• Experience in volunteer management/development work preferred
• A team member who is committed to consensus decision-making and shared responsibilities
• Minimum of one year of work experience
• Competent writing, editing, and interpersonal communication skills
• Experience working or living with diverse persons or communities
• Ability to manage conflict and resolve issues in a timely, professional manner
• Competent social media and web skills
• Commitment to consensus decision-making and shared responsibilities
• Ability to create reports and analyze data
• Competent computer literacy, including MS Office applications and database programs
• Competence in the use of audio-visual equipment
